Asheville, NC — It’s an oasis in a sea of tourism, but it’s also a place with a secret: It’s home to one of the best floriculture businesses in the world.
The Asheville-based Ashely Florists is one of only a handful of floriculturists in the United States.
The business specializes in providing flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables to restaurants, hotels, museums, churches, and the like.
This past May, the Asheville-area floristic shop opened its first branch in Jacksonville, FL.
And it’s been expanding since.
The opening of the Asheville branch has also attracted new customers from around the country.
“We’ve had a lot of people coming in for the first time who are curious about it, and they come in with a question like, ‘I’m from Florida, and how do I get flowers here?'” said owner Jack Olson.
Olson was born and raised in Florida, but he has spent the past 10 years traveling the country to find flowers for his customers.
It’s his passion, and he’s hoping to expand further with his new business.
He told Mashable that his floristics business is one part of his larger vision for the future of Asheville.
“I’ve always loved flowers, and I think we can do more with them than we can with our own shops,” he said.
And that vision has led him to Jacksonville.
“It’s been a real journey,” he told Mashables.
“There’s so much to explore in Jacksonville.”
For a little while, Olson was just looking for some flowers.
“This is just a bit of a trial run, but I’m sure we’ll be doing some flowers in the future,” he added.
Flowers can be purchased at the Asheville floreries website.
The Asheville branch is open until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays and from 7:00 a.m.-1:00 midnight on weekends.
Olson hopes that it will become the go-to place for customers looking for the best flowers for the holidays.
“You can’t go wrong with anything we sell, and we do have a wide selection of things we sell that people are really into,” he explained.
“That’s what we’re trying to change the landscape in Asheville.
It was really fun to open this place and I hope to bring people back and make them feel that we’re a part of this city.”
